When the glycogen stores are depleted, the body can shed up to two kg of water weight. This may make it seem to Felix that he is losing weight rapidly. Unfortunately, his body will quickly restore its glycogen storage and regain that weight as soon as he stops starving himself.

Though harmful, Felix's approach isn't the only weight loss program. The term "detoxification diet" refers to eating plans that emphasize or discourage the consumption of particular foods that are high in one or more nutrients. These are effective for treating certain dietary deficiencies but are too targeted to be utilized as panaceas. A low-vitamin-A diet sufferer, for instance, may benefit from a juice diet. But juicing could be toxic if you already get a lot of vitamin A from food. Maintaining a juice diet for more than a few weeks is likely to impair the immune system due to a lack of necessary fats and proteins independent of personal nutrition. Many societies have unhealthy associations with weight, and people are often driven to diet for reasons other than health or happiness; nevertheless, some of the worst side effects of extreme diets are rarely acknowledged since so few people stick to them.
